OPEN SOURCE · MIT
Typeroll CMS is open source
The CMS Core, editor, API, MCP server, static renderer, Forms and Analytics are open source under the MIT licence. Read the code, run it yourself, or let us run it in Typeroll Cloud. The same Core powers both.

What is open source
| Open source (MIT) | Separate |
|---|---|
| CMS Core and visual editor | Typeroll Cloud operations |
REST API and MCP server (@typeroll/mcp-server) | Typeroll Apps (in development) |
| Static Astro renderer and site template | Extensions you build and host yourself |
| Forms and Analytics modules | |
| Documentation |
Self-hosting
The reference profile runs the portal and Forms on Google Cloud Run with Firebase Authentication and Firestore, Cloud Tasks and Cloud Scheduler, and publishes to Cloudflare Pages with media in R2. A portable Docker Compose profile is documented as a fallback. A Cloud release and a self-hosted release use the same verified Core image.
Why it matters
- No lock-in: your published sites run in your own accounts, and the generated Astro source is in your own repository.
- Inspectable: see how content is stored, rendered and published.
- Same tools everywhere: the MCP server and API are identical in Cloud and self-hosted installations.

GOOD QUESTIONS
Questions and answers
Is Typeroll Cloud open source?
Cloud runs the same open-source Core. The operation of the hosted service is not part of the repository.
What do I need to self-host?
For the reference profile: a Google Cloud project with billing, Firebase, a Cloudflare account with R2 and Pages, and two public DNS names. See the self-hosting guide for the full list.
Can I move between Cloud and self-hosted?
Your published sites stay in your own accounts either way, and a Site administrator can download a content export (ZIP) at any time. There is no one-step import of that export into another installation yet.
