Work with your usual AI assistant

Use your usual AI assistant to edit content, create pages and build reusable components. You do not need a local development environment or a copied API key. The assistant uses your current Typeroll permissions.

Availability: personal connections and explicit site selection are introduced in Core 0.2.78 / MCP 0.45.60. Cloud needs the matching Core deployment; updating a local npm package does not update a portal. Earlier OAuth connections remain organization/site-scoped until you reconnect. Catalog listing is not required for a custom MCP connection, and Typeroll’s prepared plugin packages are not yet approved directory listings.

  1. In Typeroll, open Account → AI connections and copy the server URL. Cloud uses https://app.typeroll.com/api/mcp; self-hosted uses your portal’s /api/mcp address.
  2. Add that URL as a remote MCP server in your assistant’s connector or plugin settings. Choose OAuth when prompted. Client menus and access depend on the client and workspace; see client compatibility.
  3. Sign in to Typeroll and select Allow access. Owners, administrators and editors use this same flow. There is no organization picker or API key field in consent: the connection belongs to you.
  4. Tell the assistant which site you want to work on. It lists accessible sites, confirms the organization, site and version, and selects that context.

For example:

Work on Example Site in Example Organization, on the main version. Find the contact page, draft a clearer introduction and show me a preview before saving.

The connection can discover every site you currently have access to, including future sites. Actual content operations stay within the selected site. The assistant must confirm a switch before working elsewhere. Separate conversations keep separate selections. A page URL can identify a page inside the selected site; it never authorizes switching to another site.

Access Available work
Read Read pages, inspect templates and preview permitted content.
Write / editor Also create and edit pages, custom block types, shared Page templates and reusable sections.
Site admin Also perform site administration permitted by the existing site controls.
Organization owner/admin Also manage organization settings using an explicit organization selection.

Access is checked again for each request. Losing membership or a site share removes its access; changing a role changes the available actions. Existing organizations that have not enabled role enforcement retain their portal’s legacy site permission policy. New organizations enforce roles. Operators of older installations should review their existing role configuration before granting editor access.

Changing a shared block type or template can affect multiple pages. Ask the assistant to inspect uses and explain the impact first. Creating a custom block type is often easier with an AI agent: describe the appearance, editable fields and responsive behavior, then review its preview. The visual builder remains available for inspection and refinement.

Personal connections start with compact tool discovery. The assistant finds a relevant tool, reads its schema and calls the appropriate read/write/admin dispatcher. It need not load every tool or the complete documentation.

  • list_skills and read_skill provide reusable workflows. Start with tr-edit-site for ordinary editing: it covers page and preview links, images, menus, site-wide changes as shared blocks, settings and analytics. Load design (tr-starter-design, tr-brand), SEO (tr-seo) or migration recipes only when needed.
  • Site settings → Access & AI → AI agent instructions stores your audience, tone and editing conventions for the selected version. Administrators can update it in the portal or with update_site_settings({ agent_instructions: "…" }). read_site_instructions retrieves that guidance and editorial constraints.
  • read_app_documentation retrieves current guides for the selected site’s enabled Apps. Private App instructions are not bundled in public skills.

Site text and App instructions are guidance, not authorization to publish or change another site. Do not store credentials in instructions. A human still reviews changes. Saving a draft and publishing a site are separate actions.

Open Account → AI connections → Revoke connection. Revocation stops its access and refresh tokens. Other connections and manual API keys remain active. A connection expires after 30 days; reconnect from your assistant. Site contexts expire after 24 hours, at which point the assistant selects the site again. Older organization-scoped connections are still revoked from API keys.

Personal connections work on every Site you can reach and do not depend on the built-in AI chat in the portal, which uses the Organization’s own Anthropic key on the Sites an owner or admin chooses. See Set up the built-in AI assistant.

The same Core implementation provides personal OAuth, role checks, site selection, instructions and API keys. Configure a stable public HTTPS portal URL, working user authentication and MCP_OAUTH_SIGNING_KEY as described in self-hosting. The assistant provider must reach the endpoint and OAuth discovery routes; a private localhost address is not sufficient for a cloud-based client. Keep the signing key stable across instances and restarts. No Typeroll Cloud account or Cloud publishing provider is required for this flow.

The public repository contains a generator for ChatGPT/Codex and Claude plugin packages. Both include the same short editing skill and one remote MCP endpoint; additional recipes are read live. Self-hosted operators can generate the package with their own endpoint. See the package and submission instructions. Vendor approval and actual client testing are separate from building the package. Manual API keys and stdio remain available for automation and clients that require them.
